About us
Abdon Wildlife Group started up in the spring of 2016. We are a group of local residents who are interested in our area’s natural history. Our members have a range of interests including plants, birds, butterflies, moths, dragonflies etc. In February 2019 we became a Community Wildlife Group and changed our name to reflect the wider area that our members come from.
Our 2020 programme is being put together at the moment. Our 2019 programme included a Dawn Chorus Walk, an orchid search, a number of Moth Mornings, and a damselfly and dragonfly hunt. Sometimes, we simply get together for a walk through an interesting-looking piece of countryside, and see what we find. As the year progresses, additional activities always seem to come along. Keep an eye on our “live” programme page, so that you don’t miss out. Our activities as Community Wildlife Group are detailed in the 2019 Annual Report. Click here to view.
For the first time last year, we carried out a survey of lapwing, curlew and other birds. This is part of the Save Our Curlews campaign which is supported by the Shropshire Wildlife Trust and Shropshire Ornithological Society. We identified 2 pairs of lapwing and definitely 5 pairs, possibly 8, of curlew. We are carrying out this project again this year.
We are involved with the Our Common Cause project covering Clee Liberty. Our members will be joining in a botanical review, and a survey looking for Emperor moths and Green Hairstreak butterflies.
An important part of what we do is to help one another learn about our local natural history. We also try to ensure that our records are sent to the relevant county recorders so that we are adding to the county database. As a group, we are gradually building up an overall picture of the wildlife found in “our patch”.
If you would like to get involved with a friendly group and learn about our local natural history whatever your level of knowledge or interest please contact us through Miles at milesleach712@gmail.com
